Amazon.com Product Description
An essential for any outdoor excursion, the Garmin eTrex Venture HC helps you navigate through the toughest terrain. The unit is equipped with a high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver, which locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. The advantage is clear: whether you're traipsing through thick woods or strolling near tall buildings and trees, you can count on the Venture HC to help you find your way when you need it the most. At the same time, the Venture HC's easy-to-use menu lets you create and view waypoints (up to 500), save and view 10 track logs, access setup features, and more. It even offers 24 MB of internal memory and a detailed basemap, so you can load waypoints and routes from the included MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager software and add map detail from Garmin's entire line of optional MapSource mapping products.

Besides appreciating its small size, outdoorsmen will also be happy with the Venture HC's unique button layout, with five buttons located on either side of the unit. The benefits of this design are twofold: First, the Venture HC is a breeze to operate with just one hand, and, second, with the buttons on both sides of the unit, the bulk of the front is dedicated to the 256-color, sunlight-readable TFT display. This makes it easy to distinguish map details regardless of the time of day.

The Venture HC's basemap, meanwhile, contains lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads, and coastlines--in short, a host of helpful details for your outdoor adventures. Other details include an IPX7 waterproof housing, a built-in patch antenna, a USB interface, a hunt/fish calendar, sun and moon information, and a geocaching mode. The Venture HC, which runs for up to 14 hours on a pair of AA batteries (not included), measures 2.2 by 4.2 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

What's in the Box
eTrex Venture HC, basemap, MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager software, USB cable, wrist strap, quick start guide, user's manual.

2 out of 5 stars Not my favorite for Geocaching by a long shot   December 29, 2008

I've been geocaching for about 6 months (using a Garmin Forerunner 101), and I'm hooked. Got this for myself for Christmas, and was really excited, but quickly dissappointed. Yes, you can directly download your co-ords from geocaching.com, but that's all you get. It lists the caches by thier alpha-numeric code (like I'm going to remember which one is which), but doesn't give any info on the cache. First day out I was 3 for 9! Not the greatest receiver: in most cases, it was way off, when it told me I was at GZ. I was very sad to see that it lacked the "List of Nearest" screen that the Forerunner had, which I used often for placing caches.

On a whim I went to my local big box store and got a Magellan 400 Adventure Pack for a little more than this cost, which includes the topo maps. The Magellan 400 provides nearly paperless caching (provides full cache discription, decrypted clue, terrain & difficulty ratings, as well as who placed it), is more user friendly (but not the software, it is lacking a bit, but did get it figured out), and much easier for my average women's size hands to operate.

The result? The Venture HC is going back.

5 out of 5 stars Great GPS unit!   December 25, 2008
This is my first handheld GPS and I purchased to get started in Geocaching. This unit is very easy to use, works with the geocache website to download geocaches to unit, very sturdy and reliable unit, highly recommend!

This is a good product, but for a little more money you can get a better model.

5 out of 5 stars Garmin Etrex   December 17, 2008
It is a great product - use them for work and enjoy using them - I think the video that was included saved me a couple of hours a week of papersork. The GPS did a lot of the stuff that I was doing by hand and notes.

Warantee was fantastic - my broken one was replaced and all the waypoints were transferred to the new GPS

I am very satisfied - five stars aren't enouth

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Geocaching!   December 16, 2008
After a lot of research I bought this GPS unit for my son who wanted to start Geocaching with his 9 year old daughter . It is excellent . The color screen and easy to use features along with the HC technology make it the best buy for a beginner at a very reasonable price !
