Product Description Now you can eliminate the need for extra dedicated telephone lines with the ComSwitch 5500. Use the ComSwitch 5500 to automatically route calls to your phone, answering machine, fax OR modem - all on a single line!It lets up to 3 devices - usually a telephone, answering machine, fax or modem - share a single phone line. When you add a second or third phone number to your single line, the CS 5500 works smoothly with Distinctive Ring service offered by most local phone companies (different companies have various names for this service; check with your phone company for details). In short, the CS 5500 is able to recognize specific ring patterns assigned to your different phone numbers and route calls to the right device. The CS 5500 immediately answers every call in the "Automatic" mode. If you prefer to have all your extension phones ring normally, the "Semi-Automatic" mode is also selectable. The choice is yours. It is possible for the CS 5500 to work with Voice Messaging from the phone company (requires Distinctive Ring service activation). The system is also compatible with Caller ID service (requires service activation). Remote Message Notification - Never miss another important message while you're away. Every time you receive a voice message, fax document or data transmission, the CS 5500 will automatically send a special tone message to any desired telephone number - local or long distance. (Not compatible with tone pagers.) The CS 5500 is so smart it stays on the line during every call, listening for tone commands you send from the keypad of a telephone. So you can talk for a few minutes, push three keys, and transfer the call to your fax machine to receive a document.

comswitch 500 3-port January 6, 2009 It works great, I replace an old switch (12 yrs old). It was Easy to install. I was shipped quickly. Great price.
Comswitch 5500 December 18, 2008 Product received was as advertised. Shipped promptly. Installed without difficulty and works just as its description says it should. No problem with product or with seller.
Command Communications Comswith 550 December 12, 2008 Excellent results. This product has allowed me to link my fax to my primary phone. I was able to drop a second phone line, combine one phone line for voice/fax and save a lot of money.
This crap doesn't work as described November 29, 2008 I recently bought this Fax/Switch, I was aware of all the programming issues it had, but since I have a simple line+fax I gave it a try. It worked with the first fax I received, but after the first non-fax call I got in my voicemail, the switch sent everything to the fax, and it muted the phone voicemail (It is a built-in voice mailbox with my own voice, not a company answering machine or an answering machine per se)
I tried to work with the programming (I bought two additional DSL filter as they say in the manual) and the manual programming(setting to default - I beeped twice nor three times as they say, and start all over again.) and did nothing different with each programming set.
It DOESN'T WORK. Period. I had to packed it, and send it back to the seller, and I got a restocking charge plus shipping back charges for a piece of plastic that doesn't do what the manufacturing company says it does. I ended with a $25.00 expense (shipping back, restocking fee and the DSL filters) for a piece of crap.
I think that's why they discontinued it!
Please, think twice before being ripped off, as it happened to me and many who reviewed before myself
Amazon should stop selling this product.
The good and the bad. November 16, 2008 The Comswitch 5500 has been around for a long time and is a consistant performer,if you can get it programmed. I use it to catch fax transmissions before they go to my Avaya telephone system. Programming the switch requires patience and time. The actual wiring/hookup is simple, as Command Communications states. Programming is another matter. Read the program manuel and write down or highlight the programming that you want. Once programmed, it should work as stated.
The 2nd but important fact about the unit is that it seems to have low resistance to any type of surges. I have individual surge protection on both my AC power source and my Bell lines for the phone system and the 5500. I also have a whole-house surge protector installed. I have two dead 5500 units in my basement now. Their power supplies seem OK. The units just will not power up. Still, inspite of it's faults, the Comswitch 5500 is the best unit I've found to date.
