5 out of 5 stars Great numeric keypad   May 2, 2008

I was looking for a numeric keypad for my laptop and found this in the same aisle. It as all the functions that I needed, PLUS it can be used as a stand-alone calculator. Contrary to one other review, you can use it as a calculator with a PC - just do the calculation in Calculator mode and then press SEND to send the resulting number to your PC.

I want this primarily for home. If I wanted it for travelling, I'd buy the slightly smaller version.

One thing I didn't realize was that this is either a numeric keypad for your windows PC or a calculator. Meaning you can't use the calculator to compute when connected to the PC.

Worked great on my Vista laptop. I might get another one for travel.

The only con I saw was that the battery is not supposed to be user replaceable although it has solar power.

4 out of 5 stars Good every day use calculator   October 10, 2007

I bought this calculator primarily because I was looking for a good general use calculator.

Pros:
- 12-digit display. I hate those 8 digit calculators that can't handle large numbers. I was only looking for a 10-digit display, so having 2 extra digits pretty much ensures I'll never overload it with too large of a calculation.
- Doubles as usb number pad. Some other users have complained that it doesn't work with a Mac. Well that may be, but with PC it works great. I have an XP workstation. All I had to do was plug it in (it comes with a USB cable) and it was recognized without having to download any extra drivers.
- It has a tax button. You can program your tax rate into it, then when you need to calculate tax on something, just punch in the price and hit the button. Much simpler than having to multiply by your tax rate all the time.
- Good size buttons and display. It's not super-huge, but the buttons are big enough that I don't find myself accidentally pushing two buttons at once and I can easily read the display.
- Inexpensive. When I got it, it was only $13. As of this review Amazon bumped the price back up to around $20. If you can find it for $15 or less I think it's a good value.

Cons:
- a little bit bulky. It was designed so the USB cable stores in a partially exposed opening on the bottom of the calculator. Because of this, the calculator is a little bit thicker than it needs to be. Also because the opening is only partially covered, your fingers will feel the unevenness of the bottom if you hold the calculator in your hand like I sometimes do. I prefer to have a smooth even surface, but the opening makes the bottom uneven and a little more uncomfortable to hold.
- mine is slightly uneven. When I place it on a flat surface like a desk, all four corners don't touch so there is a slight wobble. You can fix it by slipping an envelope or something similar in thickness underneath one side to eliminate the wobble.

Overall it works well as a general-use calculator. It doesn't have any of the complicated functions that programmable calculators have. But if you just need to do basic math functions most of the time then this is a solid choice.

2 out of 5 stars Not a HID-class device   May 19, 2007
This is not a USB HID-class device, so it requires a driver, which is only available for Windows. It does not work in OS X. Disappointing.

1 out of 5 stars Two problems   May 19, 2007
First, this is NOT a "2-PORT USB HUB" as listed -- it has one type-B USB port on the back that connects to your computer, and that's it.

Second, it doesn't work at all with OS X. I hope someone suggests a workaround, but as it is this is a pointlessly expensive calculator unless you have Windows.
