Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Use the Brunton Quad Tool on your topo maps to determine distances with precision. It's the one tool that most backcountry enthusiasts don't have that makes navigating much more accurate than eyeballing or using your fingers to measure. This USGS quadrangle measurer features latitude-longitude in degrees, minutes, and seconds, and provides distance in feet and miles. It has Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) measurements with 20m resolution and a slope indicator with avalanche zone marks. Includes a 6x10 waterproof map case.

Amazon.com Product Description
The ultimate map measurer for the navigation enthusiast, Brunton's Quad-Tool offers scales for latitude and longitude calculations, as measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds, while also measuring distance in feet and miles. The result is a backcountry tool that's far more accurate than merely eyeballing or using your fingers to measure distance. The Quad-Tool measures more than 7-1/2 inches long, so you can draw long lines that are often impossible with other tools. The tool's slope indicator, meanwhile, includes avalanche zone marks to help you determine avalanche danger. And thanks to the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) measurements, you can pinpoint GPS coordinates on your map within a 20-meter resolution. For use on USGS 7-1/2-minute quadrangle maps (1:24,000), the Quad-Tool measures 7.56 by 1.625 inches and comes with a waterproof map case.

4 out of 5 stars Quad Tool is the Best I've Found   August 28, 2003

This is the most compact tool I've seen that measures both UTM and Lat/Lon coordinates. I like that all the scales are right on the edge so you can use them to mark the map. Have the people selling scales lost in the middle of a plastic sheet actually tried using them? The slope indicator is great for reality checks of planned routes.

The dual UTM scales makes dealing with UTM coordinates (my favorite system) a snap. The Lat/Lon scale gives great accuracy in a difficult-to-work-with system. I can now plot Lat/Lon coordinates faster than most people can wade through their GPS menus to change coordinate systems.

I've tried printing various free downloads on acetate, they never last long and the scale is never quite right. The Quad Tool looks as though it'll never wear out, I'll probably lose it first. It took a little while to figure out how to use the tool, but with some practice, it became second nature. The Quad Tool has become the only tool (besides a compass) I find I need to use on topo maps, both at home and in the field.
