Major Artistic Statement from Xtina June 10, 2010 Cory T. Shaeffer (Pittsburgh) 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
About two-thirds of the way down the track listing of Xtina's new album, there is an exceptional song titled "You Lost Me." That track is a reminder of what talent this woman has. This particular track could not have been delivered by any current artist (other than maybe Alecia Keys), as it is a futuristic tribute to singers such as Etta James or Thelma Huston. The suggestion that someone like Katy Perry could pull off a song like that is ridiculous. And while Xtina's assertion of her artistic prowess eventually becomes tiresome on this album, there is no denying that "Bionic" is a great record, particularly in today's shambles of a pop music market.
Critics claim that the diminutive Aguilera has chosen not to use her voice to its full capacity on "Bionic" but they are mistaken. These are the same critics, after all, who criticized her in the past for over-using her voice. True, songs like "Glam" and "Elastic Love" are very electronic and don't feature her siren at full blast. But the beats are well-crafted, and the vibe is fantastic. Should a singer be criticized for going for the vibe over the voice? Perhaps if the songs are not good, but in this case they are.
Tracks like "Desnudate" and "My Girls" might not have killer hooks that ape the catchiness of "Genie in a Bottle." But when one considers the current state of pop music, this whole affair becomes a mute point, because only a small handful of artists on the planet could have delivered an album from top to bottom like this one. The suggestion that Mariah Carey or Lady Gaga (who people need to remember has released only ONE proper studio album.....ONE) or even Britney Spears could have created an album like 2006's "Back to Basics" and then do an about face and record "Bionic" is just ridiculous. Xtina is a vocal chameleon, and like Prince she can change her vocal tone and delivery mid-song. She can sound futuristic one minute and take us back to the 1950's the next. The only criticism of "Bionic" is Xtina's endless self-absorbed ego rants (the track "Vanity" is simply repulsive), and the fact that the deluxe version runs long (23 tracks). Most of the songs have hooks, but not killer hooks - but electronic music is supposed to be that way. The songs are mostly growers. And with repeated listens, one eventually comes to terms with just how brilliant this whole affair is. Props to Xtina for trying something different on her last two studio releases, and doing so in a pop market that has a focus on the disposable pop star. This one's a keeper.
The Glam-Bitch Diva Is Back!!!! August 21, 2010 Nasty 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It's been a decade since i've listened to Christina's first smash hit single "Genie In a Bottle", here in Brazil. Since then, i've never stopped listening to her pretty good songs.
It's weird, and at the same time wonderful, to notice how much that skinny little girl has grown so much as singer, a talented role-model singer. And most important, she has grown as woman, as mother, which we can see in her albums.
In this album, Christina is loose, she's having fun, enjoying life the best way she can and she give us exatly those emotions, without losing her skills.
There are songs talking about love, hope, betrayal, motherhood, vanity (which is a funny one),sex, letting things go and just enjoyng the moment (Not Myself Tonight), loving somone for who they really are, etc, etc, etc. Christina talks about these things like no other artist.
As she said, Bionic is like Stripped. But there are a few differences: In my opinion, I compare both albums like Tv Shows (series). Let me explain: Stripped and Back 2 Basics are albums where we can see a connection among the songs, a line of reasoning, as in Walk Away/Fighter (two songs with only one story), Enter The Circus - Welcome. If you lose one song, we'll not be able to understand the next one. Said that, for me Stripped is like the tv show Lost, or 24...you can't lose any episode in order to understand the whole serie.
On the other hand, BIONIC has no strong connection among the songs. Which one is independent, has it's own story and that's it, like detective story tv show, such as The Closer, Cold Case, etc, etc, etc. But it's interesting to notice that it doesn't mean the album sucks. On the contrary, It's great, just like these series i mentioned.
I really don't get it why it's not selling the way it should.
But any way, being or not being Madam Xtina's fan, You Gotta Have this Album!
Amazing album June 9, 2010 Fantasy Lvr (Washington D.C.) 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
I am amazed with this album. Honestly, there seems to be a lot of biased opinions out there and these people are keeping others from the truth which is "Bionic" is an amazingly well done album. You won't be able to believe the dynamics of the album and the intense creativity that has molded the tracks into creations that could have come from the 80's or somewhere in the future. The deluxe version is amazing and I must say out of all the songs "I Am", "Lift Me Up", "Prima Donna", "Vanity", and "Birds Of Prey" are my favorites.
Either be a sheep and follow the negativity of a flock who most likely hasn't even listened to the album or be your own critic and give the album "Bionic" a spin. MAKE SURE YOU TRY THE DELUXE VERSION TO GET THE BONUS TRACKS.
Absolutely Stunning August 27, 2010 Mr. Titanic (United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My expectations for Christina Aguilera's futuristic album {Bi~On~iC} were quite high as I have held significant respect for Christina as a vocalist and artist over the years. She has, beyond a shadow of a doubt exceeded my standards tri-fold with a splendid display of powerful vocals, unique sound and revolutionary innovation. The art, theme, vibe and sound of Bionic continue to inspire and secure Christina's reputation as a captivating and versatile artist. She reinvents herself consistently and manages somehow to deliver the very best any of the diverse genres she decides to delve into have to offer. This time she arrives with a sexy and sleek 1950's Retro-Futuristic glamor.
Where legendary vocals and the mind's eye of a true artist meet, magic occurs, and this album is testimony to just that. One can recognize fresh music when it must grow on you (which Electronic music is intended to do)-- that is, when you have yet to see anything like it before. I admire that; soon like wildfire Bionic begins to build, and that ensures an eternal appreciation for the music, in contrast with the embers of pop music today that are quick to flare only to die out in the wind all too soon. Christina has mastered Electronic music, which can be quite the intricate genre to grasp. I just love the new direction her music has taken, and have since her song "Dynamite" in 2008.
Songs such as "All I Need," "I Am" and "Sex for Breakfast" are exquisitely fashioned while "You Lost Me" and "Lift Me Up" demonstrate the sheer prowess of this woman's elegant ballads. Up-tempo songs that include "Elastic Love," "Bionic," and "My Girls" are exciting and burn with the creativity behind a set of masterpieces. But the album shines best in the bonus tracks available only on the Deluxe Edition. "Monday Morning," and "Stronger Than Ever" liberate this album's very finest, but the true treasure and my favorite track is the enthralling collaboration with Ladytron, "Birds of Prey." It is so mysterious and alluring, the song ignites an ominous part of one's imagination. "Birds of Prey" has a very charming dark romance about it that will leave one breathless.
The only downside to Bionic is the track "WhooHoo" featuring Nicki Minaj. For the most part, it does not appear proper to the album as only the beginning and mid-track demonstrate sounds that reflect Bionic's Electro/Synth-Pop intentions. Also, "Little Dreamer" is a MUST yet it is only available through iTunes and should have been included on the disc itself. Despite this, I am very passionate about the album and cannot conceive of anything but praises for Bionic. Christina is sexy with class on this one, and only an artist of her caliber could weave together such a stunning journey. The cosmic lyrics and sound stand to prove that Christina knows no limits.
This album is not just futuristic. It's timeless.
Fun and playful June 10, 2010 Honey B. 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
First and foremost, I like the album. Like she stated in her interview this album is suppose to be fun and playful which obviously there are some fun songs in there. Like all album of all artist their might be some that you don't take a liking to and the same goes with this album. With that being said, people just need to make up their mind about who and what they want Christina Aguilera to be. Christina is just that Christina .. she likes to reinvent herself and if you don't like it "then f*** you". I don't fine anything wrong with this album, as a matter of fact I consider this album to be just like "Stripped". Everytime she comes out with an album it's the same routine with everyone. For instance, when "Stripped" came out people didn't like it and wish the old "Genie in a Bottle" Christina was back. When "Back to Basics" came around everyone is like where's the girl from "Stripped" and the same continues with this album. My only complaint about this album would be the lack of vocals, then again everyone has always complain about her over singing everything. You can't please everyone but there's definitely more great songs in this album then the first two singles.
BTW, I don't Christina is "trying to hard" actually before anyone should comment about how it's a wanna be of Gaga's you should look into her history. She planned this album way before Lady Gaga was relevant.
